One of the seminal scores of the 1980s, Stripes was a huge hit and featured a score by one of film music’s greatest legends, yet still there was no soundtrack release. Elmer Bernstein’s score for Stripes is a classic. For it he composed a march that was every bit as memorable as the one he wrote for The Great Escape. Once again, Bernstein played the comedy straight and what resulted is a tremendously exciting action score. It comes from a particularly exciting time in Bernstein's career. 1981 also included the composer’s utterly magnificent score for Heavy Metal.
When John Winger (Bill Murray) loses his apartment, girlfriend and job all in one day, he does what any red-blooded American would do: he joins the Army and nearly starts WWIII. Directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), the film also stars the great John Candy, along with Harold Ramis.
Finally, with a new, expanded DVD of the film being released, the time was right to correct this major film music oversight. It may be hard to believe, but Elmer Bernstein’s Stripes is now (and finally!) available!
